The Return

Twenty minutes later, the investigators sat in Captain Mark’s office and listened to the call Megan had received. After listening through it once, Ford called his forensic team. He requested that the unit come in as soon as possible to review the call and see if they could find any evidence of who the caller was or where the call had been made from. By the time the forensic unit arrived, they had reviewed the call dozens of times. As time passed and Monday turned to Tuesday, they were all losing focus. Time was creeping toward 2 a.m., and they decided to call it a night. The decision to call it was met with disappointment that nothing had yet been found, but they would rest and return at 9 a.m. to continue the review of the call.

Morning came in the blink of an eye. Captain Mark spoke with Chief Silverman and Agent Ford about the call, and it was decided they would continue the review of the audio and keep the FBI task force in Oakville for the time being.

Just before 9 a.m., Matt showed up with a box of coffee and a dozen donuts. Dragging from the night before, he felt everyone could use a pick me up, and what better way to start a long day than with coffee and a donut?

The investigators gathered in the conference room where the forensic unit was analyzing the audio. They were going through the process of audio enhancement to determine if they could pull any background noise. While they were doing that, the investigators decided to follow another path with the call. They had determined that the call was rhythmic in pattern, as if the caller had rehearsed what he was going to say. It needed a deeper look.

While their process continued, a call came in from dispatch to the conference room. “Hello, Captain, I wanted to inform you that we may have a homicide on our hands. I have sent units to the house, and I think you should listen to the call.”

“Send it to me, I’ll check it in my office.” Captain Mark went into his office to listen to the call, leaving the investigators to continue their work. He hit play on the recording.

The dispatch officer’s voice came through. “Nine-one-one. What’s your emergency?”

“Someone has been in my house!” a woman replied hysterically.

“Are you safe?”

“I don’t know!”

“Has anything been stolen?”

“I don't know!” the woman yelled. “He has no head! He’s been decapitated!”

There was a sound indicating the connection had been lost, and the recording ended.

Captain Mark ran over to the dispatch desk. “Are units on-site?”

“Almost. They are en route, two minutes out.”

Operating off a gut feeling, the captain asked, “What is the address?”

The dispatch officer handed a piece of paper to Captain Mark, and his eyes widened as he read it. He turned and hustled back to the conference room.

“Drop what you’re doing! We have a potential homicide.”

Matt looked up at him, puzzled. “Captain, this is very important, let’s let other units review this one.
